How to choose a trustworthy locksmith

When you're locked out or need urgent repairs, you're not in a position to shop around carefully. Here's what to look for — and what to ask — before you let someone work on your home.

1. Check they're DBS-checked

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check confirms the locksmith has no relevant criminal record. Any reputable locksmith will be happy to confirm this. If they're evasive about it, that's a red flag.

2. Ask for a fixed quote before work starts

You should know the full price before the locksmith begins — not after. A trustworthy locksmith will give you a fixed quote once they've assessed the job. If they won't commit to a price, or only offer a vague 'from' price with no upper limit, call someone else.

3. Confirm they're insured

If something goes wrong during the job — a damaged door, a scratched frame — you need to know you're covered. Ask whether the locksmith is fully insured. A professional will have proof ready to show you.

4. Read genuine reviews

Look at Google, Trustpilot, or Facebook reviews from real customers. Don't just look at the star rating — read the actual comments. A pattern of honest, detailed reviews from local people is a strong sign you're dealing with someone genuine.

5. Ask about their approach to your lock

A good locksmith will explain how they plan to open or repair your lock before they start. They should be able to tell you whether it can be opened without damage, or whether drilling is likely to be needed — and why. If they can't or won't explain, that's a warning sign.

6. Watch out for vague pricing

A very low 'call-out from £39' often means the real price is much higher once parts and labour are added on the day. Ask for the full price including all parts and labour, and get it in writing or by text before agreeing to anything.

Quick Tips

Save a reliable locksmith's number before you need one — it's the best time to check reviews and compare.

If the price on arrival is different from the price on the phone, you're within your rights to refuse.

A genuine local locksmith will know your area and give you a realistic arrival time.
