Locks wear out over time — and some are vulnerable from the day they're fitted. Here are five signs it's time to replace yours.
A key that catches or requires force is a sign the internal mechanism is wearing out. Forcing it will only make things worse — and could leave you locked out at the worst possible moment, late at night or in bad weather.
Corrosion weakens the internal mechanism, and a loose cylinder can be exploited by intruders. If your lock looks past its best — discoloured, stiff, or rattling in the door — it probably is.
You never know who still has a key. Previous owners, their family, a neighbour, a tradesperson — anyone could have a copy. Changing the locks on day one is the only way to be certain your home is truly yours.
Standard euro cylinders can be snapped in seconds — it's one of the most common burglary methods in the UK. If your locks aren't TS007 3-star rated, they should be. The upgrade is quick and far cheaper than the cost of a break-in.
Even if you have a spare, lost keys are a security risk. If they had your address attached — on a keyring, a tag, or in a bag with post — replacing the lock is the safe choice. Rekeying or replacing the cylinder removes the risk entirely.
Most cylinder replacements take under 30 minutes and can be done on the same visit.
Anti-snap cylinders start from around £55 fitted — far cheaper than a break-in.
If you're replacing one lock, ask your locksmith to check the rest at the same time.
