7 Practical Back Door Security Upgrades

Securing your back door effectively

Most break-ins occur through the back door rather than the front. Focusing your security budget here offers the best protection for your property.

1. Upgrade to a three-star cylinder

The euro cylinder is often the weak point of modern uPVC and composite doors. If you can see the cylinder protruding from the door handle, it may be vulnerable to snapping.

Replacing a standard cylinder with a three-star rated version is one of the most effective upgrades you can make. These cylinders are designed to resist snapping, drilling, and bumping.

2. Fit high-security door handles

Many handles are merely cosmetic and offer little resistance to forced entry. A high-security handle set is built with hardened steel plates that protect the underlying lock cylinder.

Combined with a good cylinder, this provides a solid layer of defence. Ensure the handle you choose is compatible with the existing multi-point locking mechanism of your door.

3. Install a sash jammer

A sash jammer is a small, inexpensive metal device that pivots to block the door from opening. They act as a secondary bolt and are particularly useful on uPVC doors.

These provide a strong visual deterrent and added physical resistance if the main lock is compromised. They are simple to operate and very effective when used as a secondary measure.

4. Reinforce your hinges

Hinge bolts are essential if your door opens outwards, as they prevent the door from being levered off the frame. Even for inward-opening doors, ensuring the hinges are securely screwed into the structural frame is vital.

If the screws are short, they only grip the door frame rather than the wall stud behind it. Replacing short screws with long, heavy-duty screws ensures the door stays attached to the building under force.

5. Check your multi-point mechanism

If your door is stiff to lock or the handle feels loose, your multi-point locking mechanism may be failing. A mechanism that does not engage properly is as vulnerable as an unlocked door.

Regular maintenance, such as light lubrication, can extend the life of these systems. If the gearbox is worn, it should be replaced immediately rather than ignored.

6. Improve the strike plate

The strike plate is the metal piece attached to the door frame where the bolts engage. A standard strike plate held in with short screws is a common failure point.

Replacing these with heavy-duty steel plates secured by long screws makes it significantly harder to kick the door in. This anchors the lock directly into the stud work of your home.

7. What is not worth the money

Avoid cheap, flimsy alarm stickers or decorative security grilles that are not professionally installed. Gadgets that promise to turn a standard lock into a smart lock without changing the underlying hardware are often a waste of money.

Focus your investment on physical hardware that makes entry more difficult for a potential intruder. Simple, heavy-duty mechanical security remains the most reliable option.
