How much does a locksmith cost in the UK?

Locksmith prices vary wildly — and unfortunately, some of that variation is deliberate. Here's an honest breakdown of what goes into a locksmith bill, what you should expect to pay, and how to spot a quote that's too good to be true.

What you're actually paying for

A locksmith bill is usually made up of three parts: the call-out (travel to you and the locksmith's time attending), the labour of opening or replacing the lock, and any parts required. A reputable locksmith will quote each of these clearly. A rogue one will quote a tiny call-out fee to win the job, then invent extras once they're standing at your door.

Typical prices you should expect

Using our own pricing as an example: a simple lockout where non-destructive entry methods work starts from £50. Openings that need other methods start from around £79 to £169 depending on the cylinder type — basic, anti-snap, 1-star or 3-star. A full lock change typically adds the price of the cylinder itself, and UPVC mechanism repairs depend on the part needed. If a quote for the same job is wildly below these numbers, ask why.

Why quotes vary so much

Fair variation comes from the lock itself — a high-security 3-star cylinder simply takes longer and costs more to open — plus the time of day. Evening and weekend call-outs legitimately cost more. Unfair variation comes from locksmiths who quote one price on the phone and another at the door. Always ask whether the figure is the total, fixed price.

Warning signs of rogue pricing

Watch for: a suspiciously cheap headline call-out fee, a refusal to give any price range before arrival, pressure to pay cash, drilling proposed almost immediately without explanation, and a final bill that's several multiples of the original quote. Genuine locksmiths open most locks non-destructively and are happy to explain every line of the bill.

Questions to ask before you agree

Three questions protect you every time: What's your call-out charge? Will I get a fixed quote before any work starts? And what happens if the lock can't be opened non-destructively? A trustworthy locksmith answers all three without hesitation. If any answer feels evasive, you're allowed to call someone else.

How SIDE prices jobs

We give you a fixed quote before any work starts, and the price you approve is the price you pay. Opening, parts and labour are itemised, we take card or bank transfer, and no additional work is ever carried out without your approval. Transparent pricing isn't a slogan — it's the only way an independent locksmith builds a local reputation.

Quick Tips

→

Ask for the total fixed price — an hourly rate hides more than it reveals.

→

A cheap headline fee is a marketing tool, not a price.

→

Evening and weekend surcharges are fair — but they should be disclosed before you agree.
