Why uPVC doors drop over time. A uPVC door drops because the weight of the door leaf is not perfectly supported by the frame or the hinges have physically moved. Over years of use, the material naturally settles and the screws securing the hinges can work loose, causing the door to sag slightly at the handle side. This downward movement prevents the locking mechanism from aligning correctly with the keeps in the frame. You will notice this when the key becomes stiff to turn or the handle requires force to lift into the locked position. Ignoring these early signs often leads to a total failure where the door will not lock or unlock at all, which is a much more difficult problem to resolve. ## The limits of hinge adjustment. Many people believe that simply tightening the hinge screws or adjusting the tension will permanently fix a dropped door. While adjustment can resolve the issue temporarily, it is rarely a long-term solution if the underlying cause is structural. If the hinges themselves are worn or if the internal metal reinforcement inside the uPVC profile has shifted, adjusting the hinges will only mask the problem. Forcefully realigning a door that is structurally compromised can damage the locking mechanism, leading to a much more expensive repair bill. It is important to diagnose whether the hinge is the cause or the victim of the movement. ## Signs of a failing mechanism. Beyond the obvious scraping against the threshold or frame, a dropped door puts immense strain on the multipoint locking gearbox. When the door is out of alignment, the hooks and deadbolts cannot seat properly in the keeps. You may feel a gritty sensation when turning the key, or the handle might feel loose or floppy. If you have to lift the handle hard or pull the door towards you to engage the lock, the door has already moved significantly. At this stage, the gears inside the mechanism are working against extra resistance every time you lock up. ## Professional assessment. I assess the entire door setup, including the frame, the hinges, and the internal mechanism, before deciding on the fix. Sometimes, the fix is a simple realignment, but often it requires resetting the glass in the door leaf itself to redistribute the weight correctly. This process involves carefully removing the glazing beads and using packers to square the door back into its frame. It is a precise task that requires experience to ensure the seal is maintained and the door operates smoothly without putting pressure on the lock. ## Costs and service information. I operate in and around Rawmarsh and cover a 15-mile radius throughout South Yorkshire. I am open from 07:00 to 23:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and closed on Thursday and Friday. Prices start from £50 for a simple lockout opening, and I will always provide a fixed quote for any repair work before I start. I do not carry out vehicle work beyond simple lockout entry, so please contact me only regarding domestic or commercial door and lock issues. ## When to call a locksmith. If your door has become difficult to operate, do not force the handle or the key. Continuing to use a misaligned door can snap the key in the lock or cause the internal gearbox to jam permanently, leaving you unable to secure your property. If you find your door is stiff, sticking, or failing to lock correctly, call SIDE on 07561 514895. I will discuss the issue with you and provide an honest estimate of when I can arrive to look at the door.
